The New Jersey Department of Health’s Infection Control Assessment and Response (ICAR) Team has visited over 90 healthcare facilities across the healthcare spectrum, identifying gaps in infection prevention practices and policies using the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) ICAR assessment tool. Antibiotic stewardship programs are an integral part of a facility’s infection prevention program, but long-term care (LTC) facilities in particular show room for improvement. Echoing these findings, the CDC has identified that approximately 70% of nursing home residents receive one or more courses of systemic antibiotics in a year. During this webinar, the ICAR Team and three New Jersey healthcare facilities will discuss the importance of antibiotic stewardship in LTC settings, the challenges in instituting programs, and how facilities got started. This webinar will emphasize the importance of antibiotic stewardship programs; but also hopes to provide facilities with resources and realistic approaches for implementation.
